Founded in 1941, Kaydon Bearing Company is a leader in the manufacture of standard slender or thin section ball bearings and slewing ring bearings. Kaydon Bearings is headquartered in Michigan with manufacturing facilities in Ohio, Mexico, China and Brazil. All facilities are ISO 9001, ISO 9100DD and multiple other ISO certified and approved for aerospace bearing applications. Kaydon Bearing Company was acquired by SKF, the world’s leading bearing manufacturer, in 2013. Kaydon bearings are used in the aerospace and defense industry, heavy equipment, medical systems, renewable energy applications and semiconductor manufacturing.

Kaydon's history

The Kaydon Company was founded in Muskegon, Michigan, in 1941 to support the United States’ entry into World War II. The Kaydon Bearing Company was founded by former Navy engineer A. Harold Frauenthal and named after his children, Kay and Don. Kaydon manufactures large precision bearings ranging from 7.5 to 10 feet for naval gun mounts. At the time, the U.S. Navy needed extremely precise and thin-walled turret steering bearings. It is said that A. Harold Frauenthal was perhaps the only man in the country who had the experience and ability to overcome this task. By the end of the war, Kaydon had expanded its bearing product line beyond military applications.

However, one of Kaydon’s hallmarks is its custom-designed, purpose-built, and difficult-to-manufacture bearings that solve customer equipment needs. The company’s dedication to such specialized products will continue to guide Kaydon throughout its history.

What are Kaydon bearings?

Kaydon’s Thinfinite® engineering experience and expertise provide a range of solutions for the world’s most unique bearings. Kaydon is now best known for its Reali-Slim® and Ultra-Slim® bearings. These bearings are considered among the lightest, thinnest, and largest precision tolerance bearings available today. Kaydon’s Thinfinite® bearing solutions reduce bearing weight, create space, reduce friction, increase design flexibility and provide excellent rotational accuracy, providing advantages in space-constrained applications.

Kaydon’s thin section bearing product line includes Reali-Slim® and Ultra-Slim®; Real-SlimTT® swivel, crossed roller, four-point contact and tapered roller bearing designs. Kaydon bearings offer the industry’s broadest range of materials, separator options, cross-sections, internal assembly options, lubricants, corrosion-resistant options, contact angles and accuracy grades.

Reali Slim® BEARING

Kaydon is also an industry leader in the design and manufacture of precision slewing bearings. Slewing bearings include four-point contact, eight-point contact, crossed rollers, and three-row roller configurations. Kaydon Slewinfinite® slew bearing solutions are ideally suited for: optimal economics for a given package size, heavy-duty applications requiring high load capabilities, precision positioning critical designs and the unique requirements of wind turbines. Kaydon’s slewing bearings are suitable for the most demanding specifications in any application and include RK Series, HS Series, HT Series, MT Series, KH Series, XT Series, DT Series, XR Series, TR Series, WireX® coil bearings and wind energy slewing bearings bearings.

Kaydon Bearing Materials

Material selection and engineering precision are important components of Kaydon’s philosophy in manufacturing bearings. The use of high-grade alloys such as stainless steel not only ensures the longevity and toughness of the bearings, but also ensures that the bearings are suitable for use in harsh environments where corrosion resistance and material strength are non-negotiable. Kaydon bearings are available in a number of different materials such as AISI 52100 chromium steel, 440C stainless steel and Cronoduir steel. Kaydon also offers ABEC 5, ABEC7 and higher tolerance bearings. These options allow you to choose from a variety of lubricants, corrosion-resistant materials, different contact angles and accuracy levels. Kaydon offers custom bearings for a variety of demanding applications. Today, Kaydon has grown to be the global leader in thin-wall bearings and the North American leader in slewing support bearings.

Kaydon Thin Section Bearings

Thin-section bearings mean that the ratio of the inner diameter and outer diameter of the bearing is less than a specified value. When the ratio of the bearing outer diameter to the bearing inner diameter is less than 1.25, it is called a thin-walled ball bearing. The precision required for thin-walled bearings is very high, the weight they can carry is reduced, and they are mainly used to bear radial loads. However, when the radial clearance of the bearing is increased, it has certain performance of angular contact ball bearings and can withstand combined radial and axial loads.

Reali-Slim®

Kaydon Reali-Slim® open ball bearings are available in bore diameters ranging from 1.000 inches to 40.000 inches. The seven series in the Reali-Slim® product line range in cross-sections from .187 x .187 inches to 1.000 x 1.000 inches. Reali-Slim® bearings offer weight and space advantages: Reali-Slim KA020CP0 weighs 85% less and takes up 83% less space than standard 6010 radial ball bearings. Kaydon Reali-Slim bearings are also available in metric sizes and can be customized with stainless steel, ceramic, seals and special lubrication.

Open Reali-Slim® bearings

Open Reali-Slim® bearings are available in three configurations: angular contact bearings (Type A), Conrad mounted deep groove radial ball bearings (Type C) and four-point contact radial bearings (Type X). The cross-sectional area of Real-Slim® bearings remains the same even if the bore diameter changes. Kaydon bearings are highly precise yet still have sufficient dynamic capacity. Reali-Slim Type X four-point bearings will carry combined radial and thrust loads.

Ultra-Slim®-ultra-bearings

Ultra-Slim® ultra bearings

Ultra-Slim® bearings offer many possibilities where precise positioning and lightweight design are critical, and their extremely thin cross-sections allow them to provide excellent size and weight constraints for low-speed or light-to-medium duty applications. . Ultra-Slim® bearings are made of stainless steel and are corrosion-resistant. Kaydon Ultra-Thin® bearings (available in angular contact, deep groove radial or four-point contact radial) are available in bore diameters ranging from 35 mm to 170 mm and are designed to meet the needs of applications ranging from robotics to cameras, satellites and inspection equipment.

Sealed Reali-Slim® bearings with integral standard nitrile rubber seals (other sealing element materials also available) and a light contact lip on the inner ring minimize frictional drag while expelling contaminants.

Endurakote® hard chromium plated thin section bearings protect against corrosion and significantly extend bearing life in harsh environments, providing corrosion resistance typically only found in stainless steel bearings, but at a lower cost.

Stainless steel thin section bearings are used in environments that require high precision and corrosion resistance. AISI 440C stainless steel Reali-Slim® bearings minimize surface degradation and rust common in harsh environment applications.

The BB Series four-point contact metric thin section bearings are an excellent alternative to crossed roller bearings for applications where cost, corrosion resistance, tighter tolerances, torque, sealing/shielding and high temperature resistance are critical. The BB series four-point contact metric thin section bearings provide optimum performance and economy to achieve the objectives for which they were designed.

Kaydon slewing ring bearings

Kaydon slew bearings offer Slewinfinite® solutions for the most demanding specifications in any application. Kaydon slew bearings are used to accommodate oscillating or rotational motions and carry large radial, axial and moment loads. Kaydon’s slew bearings are typically large diameter bearings designed to carry heavy loads over large areas, using balls or cylindrical rollers as rolling elements. Some Kaydon slew bearings include internal or external gears to facilitate integration of the bearing into the power transmission system. Kaydon selects high-grade alloy steels based on required strength, longer service life and resistance to environmental factors, with high load-bearing capacity and resistance to wear and fatigue. For applications in corrosive environments, materials such as stainless steel or surface coatings are used to enhance corrosion resistance. Kaydon slewing ring bearings are available in outside diameters from 4 inches to 282 inches (10 cm to 7.2 m).
