The Ultimate Guide to Flange Bearings

The Ultimate Guide to Flange Bearings

Flange bearing is a mechanical element used to support and guide rotating shafts. It has an inner ring track and an outer bearing housing. Flange bearings are divided into two types: one-way and two-way, which can bear both radial load and axial load. Compared with traditional bearings, flange bearings are usually used in applications with high loads and high speeds, such as in the automotive and mechanical engineering fields. This blog discusses in detail the components, materials, characteristics and application industries of flange bearings to provide a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of this field.

What is a flange bearing

Flange bearings are bearings in which the flange and the bearing are integrated. Flange bearings show their advantages when one end of the shaft does not have a connector and needs to be fixed on the plane of the mechanical equipment. The series of bearings with flanges on the outer ring make axial positioning simple, no longer require a bearing seat, and become economical. Flange bearings usually consist of inner rings, outer rings, steel balls, cages, sealing covers, chassis shells and other components. Among the most commonly used types of flange bearings are flange ball bearings and flange ball bearings with extended inner rings. Although the structures of these two types of flange bearings are different, they basically have the same feature, that is, a certain number of steel balls are set between the outer ring and the inner ring installed on the flange to withstand vertical and Loads and moments in the horizontal direction. In order to obtain low friction torque, high rigidity, and good rotation accuracy of flange bearings, small-diameter steel balls are generally used. Among flange ball bearings, it can be divided into ZZ steel plate flange ball bearing dust cover series, RS rubber flange ball bearing seal series, Teflon flange ball bearing seal series, stainless steel flange ball bearing series, ceramic flange Ball bearing series, etc.

Advantages of flange bearings

Compared with other types of bearings, flange bearings have the following advantages:

  • 1. Strong load-bearing capacity: Flange bearings use rolling elements to support and transmit loads. Compared with sliding bearings, they have higher load-bearing capacity and can better withstand vibration and impact loads. Therefore, it is widely used in high-load and high-speed mechanical equipment.

  • 2. Small friction coefficient: Flange bearings use rolling friction, which has a smaller friction coefficient than sliding friction. This not only reduces power consumption, but also reduces wear and heat generation, increasing the service life of the bearings.

  • 3. High rotational speed: Because the flange bearing uses rolling friction and has a small friction coefficient, it can withstand higher rotational speeds. This makes flange bearings suitable for high-speed rotating mechanical equipment, such as automobile engines, wind turbines, etc.

  • 4. Easy installation: Flange bearings usually have a fixed external structure and can be directly fixed on mechanical equipment through bolts or welding, making installation easy and saving time.

  • 5. Easy maintenance: The flange bearing adopts modular design and is easy to disassemble and replace. At the same time, the lubrication of flange bearings is relatively simple, and common grease or oil can be used for maintenance.

Common materials for flange ball bearings

As mentioned above, flange ball bearings consist of balls, cages, inner and outer rings, and outer flanges. The materials generally used to manufacture flange ball bearings include high carbon chromium steel 52100, stainless steel 440, stainless steel 316, ceramic materials (silicon nitride, zirconia, silicon carbide) and various plastics. We explain the materials of flange ball bearings one by one.

Ball materials for flange bearings

In flange bearings, steel balls are important components that bear load and provide support. The steel balls pass through the rolling surface and roll cyclically along the direction between the inner and outer rings of the bearing. Therefore, factors such as the load, rotation speed, ambient temperature and adaptability of the bearing need to be taken into consideration when selecting steel balls. For high-speed bearings, precision steel balls are generally required to ensure the high-speed performance and stability of flange bearings. The steel balls in flange bearings usually use high-carbon chromium steel balls, which have good material quality, moderate cost, high strength, good wear resistance, and strong corrosion resistance. They can withstand heavy loads and high-speed rotation, and maintain stable motion performance. Compared with ordinary steel balls, high-carbon chromium steel balls have a higher surface finish, are easier to roll, and have less friction, thus greatly reducing friction losses and wear of the bearings. At the same time, high-carbon chromium steel balls also have good corrosion resistance and are not easily corroded by chemicals such as acids, alkalis, and salts.

Flange Bearings Ball

In special applications, steel balls made of special materials such as anti-wear alloys and ceramics are also needed to meet the needs of special environments. In short, steel balls are an important component in flange bearings, and their material and quality have a decisive impact on the performance and life of the bearing. Therefore, when purchasing flange bearings, you need to choose steel balls with stable quality and excellent workmanship. While ensuring the normal operation of the bearings, you can also reduce equipment maintenance and replacement costs, and improve production efficiency and economic benefits.

Cage material for flange bearings

Commonly used materials for flange bearing cages include copper, synthetic resin, and steel. The copper cage has high strength and wear resistance and is used in high-temperature and high-speed applications; the synthetic resin cage has good corrosion resistance and self-lubricating properties and is suitable for low-speed and humid environments; the steel cage has good fatigue resistance and lifespan , suitable for occasions with large loads.

Inner and outer ring materials of flange bearings

SAE52100 chromium steel flange bearings

Higher hardness, longer service life
Lower cost
Suitable for 120°C constant temperature to 150°C intermittent temperature
Poor corrosion resistance

The material that most flange ball bearings are made of is chromium steel. Chromium steel 52100 is harder than stainless steel, which means a higher lifespan rating. Chromium Steel 52100 also has lower noise qualities than standard 440 grade stainless steel. Chromium steel actually has low chromium content and is not resistant to corrosion. Chromium steel can withstand continuous temperatures up to 120°C. Above this temperature, it undergoes greater dimensional changes and the hardness is affected, reducing load capacity. It can intermittently withstand temperatures up to 150°C, but above this temperature bearing life is significantly reduced.

440 martensitic stainless steel flange bearings

Good corrosion resistance to water and many weak chemicals
Suitable for -70°C to 250°C constant temperature or 300°C intermittent temperature
Slightly softer than chromium steel and therefore lower load rating
Will corrode in salt water or salt spray, poor acid/alkali resistance
 expensive than chrome steel

Grade 440 stainless steel is resistant to corrosion due to its higher chromium content and the addition of nickel, and is the most commonly used for corrosion-resistant ball bearings. Chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form a chromium oxide layer on the surface of the steel, called a passivation film. It is hardened by heat treatment and provides a good combination of strength and corrosion resistance.

The load capacity of AISI440 grade is approximately 20% lower than chromium steel, so the life rating will be slightly reduced. This grade has good corrosion resistance when exposed to fresh water and some weaker chemicals, but will corrode in saltwater environments or when in contact with many corrosive chemicals. Grade 440 stainless steel can also withstand higher temperatures than chromium steel, withstanding constant temperatures up to 250°C and intermittent temperatures up to 300°C with reduced load capabilities. Above 300°C, bearing life can be significantly shortened.

AISI316 austenitic stainless steel flange bearings

Very good corrosion resistance to water, salt water and many chemicals
Fully compensated type suitable for temperatures up to 500°C
Suitable for low temperature applications down to -250°C
Response to magnetic field is negligible
 expensive than grade 440 due to low output.
Only suitable for very low loads and low speeds
Not suitable for low noise applications

Grade 316 stainless steel flange bearings are used for higher corrosion resistance to seawater, salt spray and certain acids/alkalis. They are suitable for very high temperature applications as steel is useful at temperatures up to 500°C. They can also be used in cryogenic applications as steel retains its toughness at -250°C. Unlike grade 440 bearings, 316 stainless steel bearings are classified as non-magnetic because their response to magnetic fields is negligible, although 316 stainless steel may become magnetic after cold working.

Grade 316 stainless steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment and can only support low loads and low speeds. 316 stainless steel ball bearings have significantly lower load and speed ratings than equivalent Grade 440 bearings. Grade 316 stainless steel has good corrosion resistance when used in marine environments, if used above the waterline, or when temporarily submerged when flushed with clean water. It is less suitable when permanently submerged unless there is regular high velocity water flow over the bearing. This is because the passivation film on the stainless steel surface relies on the presence of oxygen to regenerate itself. In low-oxygen underwater marine environments (such as under stagnant seawater or mud/silt), steel may be susceptible to pitting or crevice corrosion. 316 stainless steel is less resistant to warm seawater. Pitting corrosion is a risk in seawater above 30°C, while crevice corrosion can occur at 10-15°C, and Grade 316 is still corrosion-resistant than Grade 440. Bearings made of grade 316 stainless steel can be used at high temperatures provided that suitable cage materials are used or the bearings are fully packed. Polyethylene, PEEK or PTFE are commonly used for cages in 316 stainless steel bearings.

Plastic flange bearings

Acetal resin

Excellent corrosion resistance to water, salt water and weak chemicals
Non-magnetic
Only semi-precision grade
Temperature range -40°C to +110°C
Only suitable for very low loads and low speeds

Polyetheretherketone

Excellent corrosion resistance to water, salt water and most chemicals
Good high temperature performance
Non-magnetic
Wide temperature range from -70°C to +250°C
Only semi-precision, but stronger and therefore suitable for higher loads and speeds than other plastics

Polyethylene

Excellent corrosion resistance to water, salt water and many chemicals
Extremely low hygroscopicity
Non-magnetic
Temperature range is -40°C to +80°C
Only suitable for low load, low speed and half precision

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PT)

Excellent corrosion resistance to water, salt water and most chemicals
Extremely low hygroscopicity
Good high temperature performance
Non-magnetic
Extremely wide temperature range from -190°C to +200°C
Suitable for lower loads and speeds than other plastics and only semi-precision

Aubearing’s standard plastic corrosion-resistant bearings feature acetal resin (POM-C) rings, nylon (PA66) cages and balls made of 316 stainless steel or glass. They are also suitable for food applications. However, they corrode in the presence of certain chemicals, and PA66 cages can absorb moisture after prolonged exposure, resulting in a loss of tensile strength. There are many alternative materials available for rings, cages and balls, such as polypropylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyetherketone or polytetrafluoroethylene. All plastic bearings are semi-precision and, like 316 stainless steel bearings, should not be used in precision applications. Due to the softer material, they are not suitable for anything other than low loads and speeds, although PEEK has better load-carrying capabilities. Corrosion resistance varies by material, with PTFE, PEEK and PTFE having the best all-around chemical resistance.

When using plastic bearings at high temperatures, care should be taken to select the correct material. Acetal bearings should not be used at temperatures above 110°C, and polypropylene can only be used at temperatures up to 80°C, but other materials have good high temperature resistance, especially PTFE and PEEK, and they are both suitable at temperatures up to 250°C, although PTFE has a lower load rating. Generally, plastic bearings are not recommended for vacuum applications. PEEK is an exception with very good outgassing properties.

Fully ceramic bearings are much expensive than steel bearings and therefore are often used in environments that are too harsh for steel bearings. They have good corrosion resistance, depending on the materials and chemicals encountered, and are usually supplied without lubrication. They are non-magnetic and, in addition to silicon carbide, are electrically insulating. Fully ceramic bearings can have a PTFE or PEEK cage or are available as full complement, i.e. without a cage. If supplied as a full complement, they can be used at very high temperatures.

Zirconia flange bearings have high corrosion resistance to acids and alkalis, but may degrade after prolonged exposure to hot water or steam. Low-temperature degradation of zirconia in the presence of moisture or water has also been studied. There is evidence that the surface weakens at low or room temperatures, but the effect on bearing performance is inconclusive and is not thought to seriously affect zirconia bearings.

Wide temperature range from -190°C to 400°C
Non-magnetic and electrically insulating
Speed and load are lower than steel bearings
Not suitable for low noise applications
Density is 75% of steel

Zirconia flange bearings

Compared with other ceramics, it has higher flexural strength and lower elastic modulus, so it is suitable for small impact loads and interference fits. The expansion properties are similar to chromium steel and the same as 440 stainless steel, so there is no problem in using it with steel shafts at high temperatures.

Very good corrosion resistance to water, salt water, acid and alkali
Extremely wide temperature range from -210°C to 800°C, no cage required
Non-magnetic, electrically insulating, suitable for high vacuum applications
Speed and load are lower than precision steel bearings, but Si3N4 balls are used in high-speed hybrid ceramic bearings
Not suitable for low noise applications
Density is 40% of steel
Not recommended for impact loads or interference fits

Best corrosion resistance of ceramics
Best high temperature performance, up to 1600°C, no cage required
Non-magnetic
Conductive
Density 40% of steel
Very low thermal expansion, so consider shaft/housing suitable for high temperature applications
The most brittle and therefore unable to withstand impact loads

Since ceramics are much harder than steel, they are brittle. Steel can withstand larger impacts through plastic deformation, while ceramics are susceptible to cracking. Therefore, the use of all-ceramic bearings, especially silicon nitride and silicon carbide, is not recommended where heavy impact loads are likely to occur. Due to the greater brittleness of steel bearings, fully ceramic bearings will carry approximately 65% to 75% of the load of steel bearings. The limit speed of all-ceramic bearings is only about 25% of that of steel bearings because the rings are less rounded than steel and have a greater risk of sudden failure due to lower bending strength.

Using silicon nitride or silicon carbide bearings with steel shafts or housings in high temperature applications can cause installation problems due to large differences in expansion coefficients. Bearing damage can occur if the greater expansion of the steel shaft in the ceramic inner ring at high temperatures is not taken into account. Zirconia is less of a problem because the coefficient of expansion is similar to steel. See the Shaft/Housing Fits section for information.

Hybrid Ceramic Flange Bearings

Hybrid ceramic flange bearings (prefix “CB” or “SCB”): Silicon nitride is the most popular ball in hybrid ceramic bearings because it is only 40% as dense as bearing steel but much harder, so Has greater wear resistance. Hybrid ceramic bearings are also able to achieve higher speeds due to the lower centrifugal force generated by the ceramic balls. However, due to the lower elasticity of the ball, the contact area between the ball and the raceway is smaller, resulting in higher contact pressure. This can cause the raceways to wear faster. When fully lubricated, the speed of hybrid ceramic bearings increases by approximately 30-40%. Hybrid ceramic bearings also operate better with limited lubrication, but operating speeds should be reduced. They also skid less frequently at low loads under high acceleration.

Hybrid Ceramic Flange Bearings

Stainless steel flange bearings are used and widely. This article specifically lists the advantages of stainless steel flange bearings. For some special applications, stainless steel flange bearings play an irreplaceable role.

  • 1. Water washing is stress-free: I believe everyone knows that many things are easy to rust after being washed. Once rusted, the service life of the product is greatly reduced. However, stainless steel flange bearings can be washed with confidence, even after being washed with water. Lubricant needs to be added again.

  • 2. Strong corrosion resistance: Due to the characteristics of the stainless steel material itself, the corrosion resistance of stainless steel flange bearings is also very strong and can be applied in many environments.

  • 3. Can run in liquid: Many bearings cannot be used in liquid, but stainless steel flange bearings can run well in liquid.

  • 4. Clean and hygienic: Due to the excellent corrosion resistance of stainless steel flange bearings, they can still remain clean and hygienic after being used for a long time.

  • 5. Strong temperature resistance. The temperature resistance of stainless steel flange bearings is very strong. According to research, it can be used normally in an environment of -60°C~+200°C, so this can make its use complex and Harsh working conditions.

  • Stainless steel flange bearings are also used in a wide range of applications. They can be seen on various precision instruments, equipment, electronic machinery, power tools, chemical machinery, vehicles, etc.

Precautions for installation of flange bearings:

Although flange bearings have excellent bearing performance, if they are installed improperly, they will still affect normal operation and shorten their service life. So how to correctly install stainless steel flange bearings? Based on Aubearing’s many years of experience in manufacturing flange bearings, this article summarizes the installation steps and precautions for flange bearings.

Flange bearing installation steps

  • 1. Cleaning: Before installation, the bearings and bearing seats need to be cleaned to ensure that there are no residues on the surface of the parts to avoid affecting the use effect.

  • 2. Apply lubricating oil: Before installation, it is necessary to apply an appropriate amount of lubricating oil inside the bearing and on the bearing seat, which can reduce friction and wear and extend the life of the bearing.

  • 3. Install the bearing: Make sure the bearing is correctly placed on the bearing seat, and then install the top cover.

  • 4. Install the flange: When installing the flange, you need to first align the flange with the bearing, and then tighten it together with the bearing seat fixing screws.

  • 5. Install the sealing ring: Finally, install the sealing ring to prevent dust and impurities from entering the bearing.

Precautions for installation of flange bearings

  • 1. Installation sequence: When installing flange bearings, the correct assembly sequence must be followed, otherwise it will cause performance degradation.

  • 2. Tightness: When installing flange bearings, you need to pay attention to the tightness of the screws. It should not be too tight or too loose. Too tight will affect the normal operation of the bearing, and too loose will easily loosen the screws.

  • 3. Lubrication: When installing flange bearings, be sure to apply an appropriate amount of lubricating oil, which can reduce friction and wear and increase the service life of the bearings.

  • 4. Prevent contamination: When installing flange bearings, it is necessary to try to avoid dust, oil stains and other contaminants from entering the inside of the bearing, otherwise it will cause damage to the bearing or even failure.

  • 5. Correct use: After installing the flange bearing, it needs to be used and maintained correctly, and the lubricating oil should be checked and replaced regularly to ensure its normal operation and extend its service life.
